Many people are unsure of the differences between the adjustments given by a chiropractor, osteopath and a physiotherapist.  Yes, there are some differences between chiropractor, a physio and an osteopath, as well as many similarities.

To confuse matters even more, two chiropractors could have two very different adjustment techniques and their treatment approach could be poles apart.  One chiropractor may even use physio or osteopathic techniques.

Historically, chiropractors specialise in the dysfunction of the spine / joints and its detrimental effects on the nervous system (and vice versa).  Traditionally, adjustments are made to the spine / joints and advice given on optimum health lifestyle.

Historically, osteopaths specialise on the dysfunction of the spine / joints and its detrimental effects on the vascular system.  Traditionally, adjustments are made to the spine / joints and soft tissue rehabilitation.

Historically, physiotherapists specialise on acute trauma and dysfunction of the spine / joints and the subsequent rehabilitation.  Traditionally, adjustments are made to the spine / joints and rehabilitation exercises given to restore normal function.

When a chiropractor, osteopath and a physio graduate from their respective colleges, they are free to practice any technique they wish.  The manipulation techniques they adopt in their clinic could be a chiropractic, osteopathic or a physiotherapy technique, or a mix of all of the above.

The most important factor is that all chiropractors, osteopaths and physiotherapists are all well qualified, in which ever treatment approach they deliver.

All the above professions now have statutory regulation. The Chiropractors Act received Royal Assent in July 1994. Resulting from it, the General Chiropractic Council was announced in January 1997. It is responsible for setting standards of both education and conduct within the profession, and requires all Chiropractors to be registered to practice legally in the UK.
